Description

Antique Victorian Spindle Back Rocking chair .

We bring to you this charming example of a Victorian 19th century spindle back rocking chair in lovely condition with a wonderfully aged and rustic appearance. This rocking chair of moderate proportions is made from a combination of woods that contribute to its nice light colour and distinctive grain. The broad, deeply-dished, and comfortably-shaped seat is made of elm, showcasing a prominent and attractive grain pattern. The arms and the curving yoke at the top of the back are crafted from a fruitwood, which along with the rest of the chair's structure, provides a warm tone that complements the elm.

The chair's back is characterised by a series of straight, turned spindles set between the seat and the curved top rail. Supporting the arms are two pairs of beautifully turned baluster supports, which repeat the highly decorative turned pattern found on the four legs. These turned elements are a prominent feature, adding significant visual weight and antique charm to the piece.

Finally, the chair rocks on two curved ash rockers which provide a durable base for the rocking motion and contrasts slightly with the other grains. The overall impression is one of solid craftsmanship, comfort, and enduring farmhouse country style.

The chair is in strong condition with no joint movement or breaks and has been thoroughly checked over in our workshop.

We have cleaned and waxed this chair to protect and preserve the finish making this item completely ready for its new home.

Please note; This item is in fantastic condition for its age as shown by the photographs below. Being an antique item of this age there are obviously marks, scratches and dents, however, we feel that these points are which adds to its charm and character to a piece.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Victorian spindle back rocking chairs typically feature a steam-bent crest rail, numerous vertical wooden spindles supporting the backrest, and curved rockers fitted to the legs for a smooth motion.

These chairs were predominantly crafted from solid hardwoods, most notably featuring tough elm for the sculpted seats due to its resistance to splitting, alongside beech or ash for the spindles and legs.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-turned components with minor irregularities, traditional joinery such as wedge-tenon joints, and natural patina, wear, and oxidisation accumulated over decades of use.

Positioning the chair against a neutral wall or paired with a textured wool throw allows the warm wood tones and traditional craftsmanship to serve as a focal point within contemporary or transitional living spaces.

Maintain the wood by keeping the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying, and periodically treat the surface with traditional beeswax to nourish the finish.
