Cheval mirrors originated in France during the late 18th century and became immensely popular in Britain throughout the Regency and Victorian eras as full-length dressing mirrors.

Authentic period pieces were typically constructed from solid hardwoods like mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, often featuring hand-turned supports and brass castors.

Authentication relies on examining timber grain, hand-cut screws, traditional joinery methods, and the presence of slight imperfections or oxidisation in the original silvered mirror plate.

Positioning the piece against a neutral wall allows the rich wood tones to serve as a focal point, creating a functional juxtaposition in contemporary or minimalist bedrooms.

Maintain the wood using microcrystalline wax to nourish the grain, and clean the glass with a lint-free cloth and mild solution, avoiding harsh ammonia-based chemicals.
