A wainscot chair is a heavy wooden armchair produced primarily during the 16th and 17th centuries, constructed using panel-framing techniques originally developed for wood panelling.

These chairs are traditionally made from solid English oak, joined using mortise and tenon joints secured with wooden pegs, often featuring hand-carved decorative elements.

Authenticity is determined by examining tool marks, timber shrinkage, peg construction, joinery wear patterns, and the natural oxidisation of the wood over centuries.

Pairing this piece with minimalist walls and modern textiles creates a striking contrast that highlights the rich texture and historic craftsmanship of the wood.

Maintain antique oak by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sunlight, and periodically treat the wood with traditional beeswax to nourish the finish.
