Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This English country house armchair dates from the 1900 period and reflects a classic seating style designed for traditional living spaces. The piece comprises a hardwood frame covered in cotton upholstery featuring peach and cream floral patterns. Details include rolled arms, a pleated skirt that conceals the base, and brass castors attached to the legs. The upholstery remains in fair condition with no holes, while the frame exhibits slight movement. Measuring 87 cm high by 83 cm wide and 87 cm deep, with a seat height of 41 cm, the chair offers comfortable proportions for domestic relaxation. It suits placement in a sitting room, study, or drawing room as a reading chair or an accent seat alongside a sofa. The armchair works well within period interiors or country house schemes, bringing traditional pattern and soft textile textures to everyday living environments.

FAQs

English country house armchairs originated in nineteenth-century Britain, designed for informal living spaces and drawing rooms. They are characterized by deep seats, low profiles, rolled or scrolled arms, and heavy upholstery often finished with skirts or fringe.

Authentic period armchairs feature solid hardwood frames, typically beech or oak, secured with mortise and tenon joinery. Inner construction utilizes steel coil springs, jute webbing, and natural stuffings such as horsehair or coconut fibre beneath woven cotton, linen, or wool upholstery.

Check the underside for hand-tacked webbing, original brass castors, and a solid hardwood frame showing natural age. Authentic pieces often display hand-stitched horsehair padding rather than synthetic foam, alongside traditional joinery rather than modern screws or staples.

Balance the detailed floral pattern by placing the armchair alongside clean-lined modern side tables or muted neutral walls. Incorporating natural timber accents and simple lighting allows the patterned upholstery to serve as an accent piece without overwhelming the space.

Gently vacuum the fabric using a soft brush attachment to prevent dust accumulation, and spot clean with specialized upholstery cleaners after testing on an inconspicuous area. Keep the chair away from direct sunlight to prevent fading, and periodically clean metal castors to maintain smooth movement.
