Description

Just a superb mid 17thc Oak Wainscot Armchair, in the original condition you like to find them in....the only small repair it has had, is a small splice to the front of the seat....done a very long time ago and a small brace underneath the seat for support....wonderful original colour, dated 1696, but the chair is earlier.... made from around 1640 and it was probably dated later as a wedding gift or present to someone with the initials E B....the quality of the wood used and the skill of the maker, has produced a very nice chair , that would enhance any early collection of oak furniture...!

A wainscot armchair is a heavy wooden chair constructed primarily from oak, featuring panelled backs and solid armrests, typically dating from the late sixteenth to the late seventeenth century in England.

These chairs were traditionally constructed from solid English oak using mortise and tenon joints secured with wooden pegs, often featuring carved wooden panels and turned supports.

Authenticity is identified through period-appropriate joinery techniques, hand-carved details, natural timber ageing, historic tool marks, and appropriate wear patterns consistent with centuries of use.

A wainscot armchair works effectively as a statement piece in a study, hallway, or living room, paired with minimalist modern decor to highlight its architectural form and historic texture.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight, and periodically applying microcrystalline wax to nourish and protect the historic wood finish.
