FAQs

Edwardian mirrors often feature geometric shapes, simplified classical motifs, and a return to rich natural wood grains like oak, reflecting a shift towards lighter, more restrained interior aesthetics compared to the heavy ornamentation of the Victorian era.

Traditional construction typically involved solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut for the frames, joined at the corners with secure mitre joints, and paired with bevelled or flat silvered glass plates backed with protective wooden panels.

Authentic pieces often show signs of age such as foxing or minor oxidation on the mirror glass, hand-cut screws or traditional fixings on the reverse, and natural patina, shrinkage cracks, and wear within the wooden frame.

An antique wooden mirror can be used as a contrasting focal point on a plain painted wall, or hung above a minimalist console table to blend historical character with modern clean lines.

Preserve the frame by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and occasionally applying neutral beeswax to nourish the wood, while cleaning the glass with a non-ammonia cleaner applied to a cloth rather than sprayed directly onto the surface.
