Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pier mirror, or pier glass, was originally designed during the 17th and 18th centuries to be placed on the wall space or pier between two windows. These mirrors were proportioned tall and narrow to reflect incoming daylight, enhance room illumination, and match the surrounding architectural mouldings.

19th-century pier mirrors were typically constructed from carved pine or lime wood coated with gesso and covered in real gold leaf. The mirror plates were made from silvered or mercury-backed glass, often paired with painted eglomise or printed decorative panels at the top.

Authentic period pieces display natural age signs such as light oxidation or foxing on the glass, minor cracking in the gesso layer (craquelure), and dark reddish bole clay peeking through worn gold leaf. The backboards are usually rough-sawn solid timber with iron nails.

Place a pier mirror in a narrow hallway, between two double-hung windows, or centered above a slim console table to create visual height. The classical gilded frame provides contrast when juxtaposed against neutral contemporary wall paints or modern minimalist furniture.

Dust the gilded frame gently with a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfiber cloth, avoiding water and liquid polish which dissolve water-gilded gesso. Clean the mirror plate separately by applying glass cleaner to a cloth rather than spraying directly onto the glass.
