This Victorian wall mirror dates from 1880 in a gentleman's library style. The architectural piece incorporates a stepped profile, a multi-pane grid layout, and an ebonised border moulding framing the seven glass sections. Constructed from wood with a dark brown and black finish, the timber displays warm brown tones combined with dark ebonised accents around each glass pane and along the outer edges. The item measures 91.4 cm high, 78.7 cm wide, and 3.8 cm deep, providing a compact statement scale for interior placement. Suitable for residential interiors, this wall mirror hangs effectively above a sideboard in a dining room, living area, or hallway to reflect light and expand the visual space. The multi-pane arrangement provides a window-like effect reminiscent of traditional architectural glazing. The straightforward geometric construction integrates cleanly into period or transitional interior schemes without dominating surrounding furnishings.

Dust the wooden frame regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh solvents or chemical cleaners that can strip the ebonised finish. Spray glass cleaner sparingly onto a cloth rather than directly onto the mirror to prevent liquid from seeping behind the glazing bars.

A stepped sectional mirror works effectively when mounted above a hallway console table or a living room mantelpiece. The linear geometry provides visual contrast against soft furnishings, while the dark ebonised tones complement both traditional timber pieces and contemporary minimalist schemes.

Authentic period examples often display slight distortions, minor desilvering, or oxidation specks in the individual glass panes. Additionally, inspect the reverse for hand-sawn wooden backing boards, original iron mounting brackets, and natural wear along the ebonised mouldings.

These pieces traditionally feature hardwood frames, such as mahogany, walnut, or pine, combined with ebonised detailing created through dark stains or black lacquers. The reflective panels consist of mercury or silvered glass held securely by thin timber glazing bars.

A sectional or multi-pane mirror is a reflective wall fixture composed of multiple individual glass panels set into a single divided frame. Historically popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, this construction technique created larger architectural focal points before modern techniques allowed the economical production of vast single glass sheets.
