This George II wall mirror dates from the Georgian period and follows the classic English Country House style. The piece uses walnut timber with a warm brown colour, complemented by parcel gilt trim and a glass mirror plate. The design includes a scroll-cut swan-neck pediment with curled terminals, eared corners along the rectangular frame, and a shaped apron with carved scroll details at the base. Gilt mouldings edge the inner and outer borders of the frame, showing textured decorative carvings and aged patination across the wooden surfaces. Measuring 113 cm high, 22 cm wide, and 3 cm deep, this wall mirror suits placement above the mantel in a living room, hallway, or dining space. The original glass plate reflects light while maintaining period authenticity, making the mirror a practical and historical accessory for traditional interiors.

FAQs

George II mirrors from the mid-18th century feature figure-grained walnut veneers, architectural silhouettes, parcel gilded mouldings, and decorative pediments such as swan-neck or scroll crestings.

Craftsmen typically utilised pine or oak carcases veneered with walnut, detailed with carved water-gilded wood ornament, and fitted with mercury-backed glass plates.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-sawn backboards, signs of oxidation or silvering degradation on original mirror plates, and hand-carved parcel gilding along the inner and outer frame borders.

Positioning the mirror above a living room mantelpiece or a hallway console table creates an architectural focal point that pairs well with contemporary neutral wall colours.

Dust surfaces gently using a dry soft brush to protect gilding, avoid liquid glass cleaners on original plates, and maintain stable indoor humidity to prevent wood veneers from lifting.
