This late seventeenth-century English single side chair originates from the period between 1680 and 1690. Constructed from dark brown oak, the piece displays a natural patina. The tall backrest includes a carved cresting rail with projecting ears and a pierced central splat with an unusual shape. The seat holds a tapestry cushion decorated with a cream-coloured tassel fringe hanging along the front edge. Below, the structural frame incorporates turned legs joined by stretchers. Measuring 111.8 cm high, 44.5 cm wide, and 39.4 cm deep, the chair functions as a practical seating option suited for placement in a traditional hallway or reception room.

Seating from the late 17th century, encompassing the Charles II and James II periods, is characterised by native oak construction, turned legs, stretcher bases, and carved or pierced splat backs that reflect continental woodworking influences.

Craftsmen constructed these pieces using solid English oak joined with mortise and tenon joints held by wooden pegs. Components were shaped using hand planes and lathes to create turned stretchers and legs.

Authentic period examples demonstrate signs of hand-tooling, irregular wooden peg joinery, natural wear on the front footrests and lower stretchers, and deep, uneven patination acquired over centuries.

Position the chair as a standalone accent piece in an entryway, alongside a modern desk, or within a hallway alcove to create contrast against contemporary architectural lines and light wall finishes.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and moist environments to prevent movement. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice per year using a soft cloth, buffing along the direction of the grain.
