Scandinavian marriage boxes, often created as dowry chests during the 18th and 19th centuries, were traditionally given as wedding gifts to hold a brides valued personal belongings, textiles, or documentation.

These boxes were typically constructed from native woods such as pine, birch, or oak, featuring hand-forged iron strapwork, hinges, and locks, finished with hand-painted folk art motifs.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery, hand-forged ironwork with correct oxidation, traditional natural pigment paints, and genuine wear consistent with age and domestic use.

Placed on a large console table or bookshelf, these decorative boxes add warmth, historical texture, and a focal point of colour to contemporary or rustic interior schemes.

Preserve antique painted wood by keeping it out of direct sunlight, maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, and dusting gently with a dry, soft cloth without using chemical cleaners.
