The William and Mary style emerged in late 17th-century England, heavily influenced by Dutch design following the ascent of William III and Mary II to the throne in 1689. It is characterised by a transition toward lighter, more structured forms, featuring elaborate turning, scrolled feet, and the introduction of high-backed upholstered seating designed for interior comfort.

Authentic pieces from this period typically utilized native timbers such as oak, walnut, or beech for the exposed frames and stretcher bases. Construction often featured mortise and tenon joinery, hand-turned legs, and traditional stuffing materials like horsehair, wool, and linen web foundations beneath the upholstery.

Authentication relies on examining the joinery for hand-cut joints, inspecting the timber for period-appropriate tool marks and patina, and analyzing the turning style of the legs and stretchers, which frequently display inverted cup or trumpet shapes. Additionally, the construction of the frame and the wear patterns on the base provide strong indicators of age.

This type of statement seating works effectively as a focal point in a living room, study, or reading corner, paired with contemporary minimalist elements to highlight its historical form. Incorporating it alongside neutral walls or modern lighting allows the traditional craftsmanship and textile pattern to stand out without overwhelming the space.

Preservation requires keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the fading and degradation of historic textiles and dry timber. Regular, gentle vacuuming with a soft brush attachment removes dust, while professional conservation is recommended for any structural repairs or textile stabilization.
