Nineteenth-century overpainted gilt mirrors feature wooden frames layered with carved gesso and gold leaf that were subsequently painted over to match changing interior trends in later decades.

These mirrors were constructed using pine or lime wood frames, coated with a mixture of gesso and chalk, gilded with thin sheets of gold leaf, and fitted with heavy silvered glass.
