Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

The Regency style flourished in Britain during the early 19th century, drawing heavy inspiration from classical Greek, Roman, and Egyptian motifs. Mirrors from this period typically featured symmetrical geometry, gilded plaster or wood frames, and classical ornamentation such as acanthus leaves or egg-and-dart moulding.

Authentic period frames were constructed from softwoods or hardwoods like pine or gesso-coated timber. The gold finish was traditionally achieved by applying thin sheets of gold leaf over a red or yellow bole base, often combined with hand-carved or moulded compo details.

Authentication involves examining the mirror plate for foxing, oxidisation, and slight waviness typical of older glass manufacturing. The frame should show signs of age such as shrinkage cracks in the gesso, hand-tooled details, and genuine wear to the gilding rather than uniform modern paint finishes.

An antique mirror adds a layer of historic contrast and reflects natural light to make contemporary spaces feel larger and brighter. Placing it above a modern console table or minimalist fireplace creates an effective focal point that bridges traditional and modern design aesthetics.

Gilded surfaces are extremely fragile and sensitive to moisture, humidity fluctuations, and abrasive cleaning products. Dusting should be performed gently with a soft, dry ostrich feather duster, avoiding any liquid cleaners or chemical polishes that can strip the gold leaf.
