FAQs

Overmantel mirrors gained significant popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries, traditionally designed to be hung directly above a fireplace mantel to reflect candlelight and natural daylight into the room.

Authentic period mirrors typically feature hand-carved wooden frames finished with gold leaf or gesso, holding heavy glass plates that often exhibit characteristic foxing and silver oxidation over time.

Key indicators of age include hand-beveled or float glass with subtle imperfections, original wooden backing boards held by old handmade nails, and signs of natural oxidisation and wear within the silvering.

Pairing a large antique mirror with contemporary minimalist furniture creates a balanced contrast, drawing the eye upwards and enhancing spatial depth in both traditional and modern living spaces.

Dust the gilded frame gently with a soft, dry brush and clean the mirror glass using a microfibre cloth with a mild glass cleaner sprayed onto the cloth rather than directly onto the glass surface to protect the antique backing.
