FAQs

The Sussex chair was inspired by traditional vernacular seating found in country cottages and popularised by designers associated with the Arts and Crafts movement, including Ford Madox Brown and William Morris, during the mid-to-late nineteenth century.

These pieces were typically constructed from turned local hardwoods such as beech or ash, finished with an ebonised or painted surface, and traditionally featured woven rush, cane, or upholstered pad seats.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit traditional joined construction methods, hand-turned components, age-related wear to the painted surface, and construction characteristics consistent with nineteenth-century workshop production.

This type of chair works well as a versatile occasional piece, contrasting effectively against modern minimalist dining tables or serving as a characterful accent in a study or hallway.

Preserve the original finish by avoiding direct sunlight, keeping the item away from extreme temperature fluctuations, and cleaning only with a soft, dry cloth without harsh chemical polishes.
