FAQs

Windsor chairs originated in England during the early 18th century, characterised by a distinctive construction where the seat is a thick wooden slab into which the legs and back spindles are directly inserted.

Traditional Windsor chairs were typically constructed using a combination of timbers, frequently featuring an elm or ash saddle seat, ash or beech spindles and legs, and bent yew or elm for the bow back.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-turned components with minor irregularities, wedge-and-tenon joints visible on the seat top, and natural wear patterns such as deep patina and indentations on the wooden saddle seat.

These chairs provide a grounding organic element in contemporary settings and can be paired with a sleek modern dining table to create an intentional contrast between old and new textures.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and occasionally treating the timber with appropriate microcrystalline wax to nourish the finish.
