FAQs

A tea caddy is a small box or chest historically used to store dried tea leaves securely, often featuring compartments and a lock during a period when tea was an expensive commodity.

These boxes were typically constructed from fine timbers such as mahogany, rosewood, or satinwood, frequently embellished with decorative veneer, stringing, and shell or floral inlay motifs.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the dovetail joints, hand-cut screws or nails, type of secondary wood inside, patination, and the presence of original brass hardware or escutcheons.

Such pieces function well as accent objects on mantelpieces, bookshelves, or console tables, adding texture, historical interest, and warmth to a room scheme.

Preservation involves keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations, applying occasional microcrystalline wax, and avoiding harsh liquid cleaning agents.
