Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Porcupine quill boxes originated during the 19th century in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and India during the British colonial period. Crafted primarily for export and the tourist trade, these boxes combined local materials with Western forms, such as the sarcophagus shape popular during the Regency era.

These boxes were constructed using indigenous hardwoods such as ebony or teak, set with quill sections from porcupines. Inlaid borders and feet were commonly carved from bone or ivory, often featuring dark ink-engraved floral or geometric motifs.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut quills set into solid wooden bases with minor natural variations in quill size and colour. Look for original brass escutcheons, hand-carved bone or ivory elements, and signs of age-related oxidisation on the interior and underside.

A quill box serves as a textured accent on an office desk, console table, or library bookshelf. Its dark wood and light bone highlights complement both traditional scheme palettes and minimalist contemporary surfaces.

Keep the box in a stable climate away from direct sunlight, radiators, or damp conditions to prevent wood shrinkage and quill movement. Dust gently using a soft brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid polishes or harsh chemical cleaners.
