A Regency period birdseye maple lidded work box with boxwood stringing and chequer-board inlay;  original lion’s mask carrying handles, standing on ebonised bun-feet.  The open interior lined with marbled paper.  Circa 1820

We deal in 18th and early 19th century furniture, barometers and clocks. We choose our stock for its originality and for the quality of its colour, patination and design.

We are members of the BADA. We do not exhibit at fairs preferring to deal from our Cambridge shop where we hold Open Weekends from time to time.

FAQs

During the British Regency era of the early nineteenth century, work boxes were designed as portable storage containers for needlework, embroidery tools, and writing materials. Usually kept in drawing rooms or parlours, these decorative caskets reflected the owners status through high-grade timber veneers and fine craftsmanship.

Cabinetmakers during this period favoured figured native and imported timbers, including birdseye maple, rosewood, burr walnut, and mahogany. These pieces frequently featured ebony and boxwood stringing, brass lion-mask ring handles, bone or ivory escutcheons, and polished brass ball feet.
