The Windsor chair originated in England during the early 18th century, developing from vernacular furniture-making traditions where spindles were inserted directly into a solid wooden seat.

Traditional construction typically utilised a combination of timbers, often employing ash or elm for the sculpted seat, bent ash for the bow or hoop back, and beech or birch for the slender spindles and legs.

Authentic pieces feature handmade construction marks such as adze marks on the saddle seat, wedged tenon joints protruding through the seat top, and natural wear patterns consistent with age.

An antique Windsor chair provides functional sculptural contrast when placed against minimalist or contemporary backdrops, working effectively as a desk chair or an accent seating piece.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and occasionally nourishing the timber with traditional beeswax to protect the patina.
