This 19th-century Victorian tub armchair follows the Woodstock style, presenting a traditional form with a curved backrest and a sprung seat. The piece is upholstered in a cream damask fabric with an all-over pattern, complemented by button tufting along the interior back and arms. The exposed timber frame stands on turned front legs fitted with brass and porcelain castors, and areas of wear and fraying are visible along the front upholstery edge. Measuring 85 cm wide, 86 cm deep, and 82 cm high, the armchair fits easily into sitting rooms, studies, or bedrooms for everyday seating in an English Country House interior.

FAQs

A tub armchair, also known as a barrel chair, features a continuous curved backrest that sweeps seamlessly into integrated armrests to enclose the sitter.

Traditional tub armchairs are constructed with solid hardwood internal frames, hand-tied coil springs, natural fibre padding, turned timber legs, and woven upholstery fabric.

Authentic period tub chairs display hand-turned timber legs with original metal castors, traditional webbed and coil-sprung seat construction, and heavy timber framing beneath the upholstery.

Position a tub armchair in a corner or reading nook paired with a minimalist side table and standing lamp to create a balanced contrast between traditional texture and modern lines.

Vacuum the fabric regularly using a low-suction soft brush attachment, keep the chair out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, and polish exposed wooden legs with natural beeswax.
