This pair of Georgian side chairs originates from the Hepplewhite period, dating to circa 1790. Formed from fruitwood with a deep caramel tone, the frames display a warm brown timber colour with a lightly time-worn, aged patina and visible relief carvings on the crest and lower rails. Each piece features a striking shield back with a prominent crest rail and distinctive back splats, overstuffed cushions upholstered in patterned peach fabric, and gently tapering square legs united by an H-stretcher. The chairs measure 94 cm high, 51 cm wide, and 54.5 cm deep. Suitable for use in a reception hall or as accent seating at the side of a room, these traditional English country house hall seats provide solid joints and construction. The plump, generous seats sit at a comfortable height of 47.5 cm, while the upholstery remains ready to be enjoyed as-is or recovered to personal taste. Their sturdy architectural form and classic period details allow them to blend easily into formal or casual interior layouts while offering functional daily seating.

Hepplewhite chairs are characterised by light, balanced proportions, neoclassical design influence, and distinctive shield, heart, or oval backrests often incorporating carved wheat sheaves, splats, or drapery motifs.

Cabinetmakers primarily used hardwoods such as mahogany, satinwood, and fruitwood, incorporating mortise and tenon joinery alongside hand-carved back splats and corner blocks for structural stability.

Authentic 18th-century pieces typically exhibit hand-cut joinery, asymmetrical tool marks on unseen surfaces, genuine age patina on timber frames, and square-tapered legs with H-stretcher supports.

Position a pair of shield-back side chairs in an entryway or flank a contemporary console table to introduce classical structure and natural timber tones into modern living spaces.

Dust timber frames regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually along the wood grain, and clean upholstered seats using a soft brush vacuum attachment.
