This large master's armchair dates from the late seventeenth century and originates from the West Country, exemplifying traditional English oak furniture from the period. The piece is constructed entirely from solid timber with a well-patinated mid-brown colour, featuring mortise and tenon joinery throughout. Specific structural elements include a high panelled backrest with a shaped crest rail and a single fielded central back panel, flat horizontal wooden armrests supported by plain posts, and a solid wooden plank seat resting on a heavy rectangular frame reinforced with three horizontal stretchers on the lower front section. Practical proportions measure 127 cm in height, 60 cm in depth, and 61 cm in width, making it a substantial seating option for daily use. The rustic farmhouse aesthetic suits placement in a traditional study, a grand entrance hallway, or as a statement armchair beside a fireplace in a period living room. The sturdy construction provides a stable seat for regular indoor use, while the historic character adds period authenticity to interior settings.

A wainscot chair is a heavy, joiner-made oak armchair featuring a panelled backrest, flat armrests, and robust legs connected by stretchers. Originating in the 16th and 17th centuries, these chairs served as formal seating for the head of a household or primary master.

These chairs were crafted from native English oak using mortise and tenon joints held together with hand-carved wooden pegs. The timber was split or hand-sawn, featuring thick fielded back panels, sturdy plank seats, and turned or square-section framing.

Authentic period pieces exhibit uneven hand-hewn surfaces, wooden peg construction rather than modern screws, and dark oxidation around joint intersections. Natural shrinkage over centuries often results in slightly irregular proportions and subtle warping along the oak grain.

A heavy 17th-century armchair creates strong visual contrast when set against crisp, light-coloured walls or minimal contemporary backdrops. Positioning the chair in a hallway, reading corner, or beside modern textiles highlights its sculptural profile and historical surface texture.

Apply high-quality beeswax paste once or twice a year to nourish the timber and protect the original surface finish. Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and extreme changes in humidity to prevent timber splitting or joint separation.
