This nineteenth-century French cushion mirror brings period character to a home interior. The Victorian wall mirror takes inspiration from French chateau design, executed in warm gold brass, glass, and wood. An ornate repousse brass frame surrounds the glass plates, highlighted by elaborate foliate ornamentation and a prominent floral cresting at the top. The piece includes a central rectangular bevelled glass plate alongside a cushion mirror border, accented by decorative corner flowers and beaded moulding details. The original brass surfaces show subtle signs of age through natural tonal variations in the metal finish. Measuring 59 cm high, 34 cm wide, and 6 cm deep, the mirror functions practically in living spaces as a decorative accent. It works well when positioned above the mantel in a reception room or hung in a hallway to reflect light and add architectural interest.

FAQs

A cushion mirror, or miroir coussin, is a style developed in the 17th century and widely produced throughout the 19th century in France. It features a central mirror plate surrounded by angled, secondary mirror border plates that resemble the sloped sides of a cushion, usually framed in embossed sheet brass.

These mirrors typically feature a hand-carved wooden core clad in thin repousse or stamped sheet brass. The reflective elements consist of a bevelled central glass plate flanked by angled border glass segments.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-tacked brass cladding over a solid pine or oak backing structure, natural oxidisation on the unpolished metal, and original mercury or silvered bevelled glass with subtle foxing.

A brass cushion mirror creates a focal point when placed above a fireplace mantelpiece, in a narrow hallway, or positioned above a contemporary sideboard to contrast warm metallic texture against neutral paint finishes.

Clean the brass cladding gently with a dry microfiber cloth to preserve the natural patina, avoiding abrasive chemical polishes. Clean the glass with a mild, alcohol-free spray applied directly to a cloth rather than sprayed onto the frame.
