Regency Giltwood & Gesso Overmantle Mirror

19th century
Description

A Very Attractive Regency Period, 19th Century, Giltwood And Gesso Overmantle Mirror, Having Attractive Carved Decoration To Top Incorporating Central Carved Shell And Foliate Scrolls, Over Replacement Triple Mirror Plates Flanked By Elegant Egyptianesque Scrolling Columns.

As suggested by the name overmantle mirrors were made to sit on, or just above the mantelpiece in large Georgian and Regency homes. They were nearly always low and wide so as to fill the space in an attractive fashion. They come in many different shapes, designs, sized and qualities and this is a particularly nice, but at the same time not excessively elaborate example.

This particular example is a little different to many that you will see, with particularly attractive carved decoration and the unusual egyptianesque type columns which create a nice contrast with their ebonised heads and feet. The mirror plates are probably not original and it’s worth noting that there is not really any silvering of significance aside from some very minor tiny spots.

There are of course various old marks, scuffs, scrapes, scratches etc to the gilded frame which are consumate with the age of the piece and as with most of our stock this item has been cleaned and polished in the traditional fashion within our workshops by our skilled and experienced craftsman before being offered for sale, meaning it is ready to go straight into the home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency overmantel mirrors typically feature low, wide rectangular proportions designed to span the width of a chimney breast. Frame designs from this era frequently incorporate classical Greco-Roman and Egyptian motifs, such as pilasters, ball moulding along the cornice, and detailed gesso friezes.

These mirrors were constructed using a carved wood frameoften pine or limecoated with layers of gesso and bole. Gold leaf was applied using water gilding techniques, while the reflective glass was held within wooden backboards.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural age-related craquelure in the gesso, gentle wear revealing the red or grey bole beneath the gilding, and original wooden backboards held by antique nails. Original glass often shows slight oxidation or grey spots.

An overmantel mirror is positioned centrally above a fireplace hearth to anchor a living space or drawing room. It can also be mounted above a hallway console table or dining room sideboard to reflect light and expand the visual depth of the room.

Giltwood frames should only be dusted gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or dry soft-bristled brush. Water, spray cleaners, and chemical solvents must be avoided, as moisture dissolves water-based gesso and removes gold leaf.
