A George 111 Open Arm Painted Elbow Chair, Late 18th Century.
Attributed to Gillows by impeccable authority.
An enchanting George 111, 18th century painted elbow chair featuring 3 layers of paint from original cream, later green and finally a brown paint layer which has later blistered and caramelised in areas, structurally excellent.
A handsome elbow chair of exquisite proportions, possibly fruit or yew wood which started life or soon after painted cream which was later painted green, popular in the Regency era and then again brown, probably during the Victorian period, each layer is visible.
The chair is very original and very useable, please note a replaced single stretcher which was probably replaced during the 19th century for a straight timber.
We are undecided whether to keep as it is or consider to the workshop to remove the brown paint layer or remain as is but just consign to workshop to conserve and preserve the appearance and wax.., until then available as it is, an exceptional chair.
