Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian open armchair is a nineteenth-century seating design featuring padded armrests supported by exposed timber uprights rather than fully enclosed upholstered sides. Popularised during the mid-to-late Victorian period, these chairs prioritised comfort through deep buttoning, coiled spring bases, and ergonomic raked backs.

Traditional Victorian armchairs feature solid hardwood frames made from mahogany, walnut, or rosewood. The upholstery framework incorporates steel coil springs, natural horsehair and coconut fibre padding, heavy jute webbing, and calico linings, anchored on turned legs with brass castors.

Authentic period examples display hand-turned front legs, brass socket castors, hand-stitched horsehair stuffing, and dowelled timber frame joinery. Original pieces frequently feature hand-tufted backrests with deep buttoning and traditional tack lines visible on the underside of the rails.

Position the armchair as a focal point alongside a contemporary floor lamp and a minimalist side table to build a balanced reading nook. Retaining the piece in a dark calico lining creates a textured, architectural aesthetic against plaster walls and contemporary soft furnishings.

Vacuum the upholstery gently using a soft brush attachment to remove dust from the tufting folds. Condition the exposed timber legs with natural beeswax polish and position the chair away from direct heat sources to prevent the wood frame from warping.
