Overmantel mirrors gained widespread popularity in the 18th and 19th centuries, designed specifically to hang above fireplace mantelpieces to reflect candlelight and natural light around formal reception rooms.

Authentic period mirrors are typically constructed from a carved wooden subframe coated in layers of gesso, which is then hand-gilded with gold leaf or finished with metallic paint.

Authenticity is identified by examining the original heavy pine or hardwood backing, hand-cut joinery, minor oxidisation and foxing on the mercury or silvered glass plate, and the natural ageing of the gesso layer.

An antique mirror creates a striking focal point when mounted above a modern fireplace or propped against a living room wall to introduce historic contrast, scale, and reflected light.

Gilded frames should be dusted very gently with a dry, soft feather duster or microfibre cloth, avoiding any moisture, chemical solvents, or abrasive cleaners that can damage the delicate historic finish.
