The Arts and Crafts movement emerged in the late 19th century as a reaction against mass production, emphasising traditional craftsmanship, hand-working, and simple functional forms inspired by nature and medieval guilds.

Makers of this era predominantly utilised solid native hardwoods such as oak, ash, and elm, paired with natural textiles, hand-beaten copper, and vegetable-tanned leather upholstery secured with decorative tacks.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit traditional joinery techniques such as mortise and tenon joints, visible pegging, handmade construction marks, and patination consistent with age rather than machine perfection.

These items anchor a dining space by introducing architectural gravity and textural warmth; they pair well with contemporary minimalist tables or vintage scrubbed pine to create a balanced, eclectic aesthetic.

Maintain the timber using microcrystalline wax to nourish the grain without buildup, and clean leather upholstery gently with a dry or barely damp cloth, avoiding direct sunlight and excessive heat sources.
