Description

A set of eight Arts & Crafts oak dining chairs dating to circa 1890. Comprising two carver armchairs and six side chairs, with pierced tree shaped decoration to the headrests and vase shaped back splats, on square tapering legs joined by H and additional back stretchers, the armchairs with wide curved arm rests and raised on brass castors, the seats covered with red leather on the side chairs and reddish tan rexine to the armchairs.

The frames in good solid condition with original colour, marks and rubbing as should be expected from age and use, two of the seats on the side chairs do have dent lines and paint spots, the armchair seats also have some marks and all have plenty of wear left in them if desired, overall a good quality set of sturdy Arts & Crafts chairs with design similarities to the well known names of Shapland & Petter, Wyllie & Lochhead and Liberty's.

The Arts and Crafts movement emerged in Britain during the late 19th century as a reaction against mass production, championing traditional craftsmanship, high-quality natural materials, and simple, functional forms.

Pieces from this era typically feature solid native hardwoods like oak, often quarter-sawn to highlight the grain, alongside traditional joinery techniques such as mortise and tenon, complemented by leather upholstery fixed with decorative studs.

Authenticity is identified through visible, hand-finished joinery, sturdy construction, natural timber patination, and design motifs inspired by nature or medieval craftsmanship rather than industrial machinery.

Pairing historical timber seating with a sleek, contemporary dining table creates a striking contrast that anchors a dining space with character and warmth, blending heritage craftsmanship with modern minimalism.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to protect the wood and leather, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the timber surface without sealing it.
