Antique treen refers to small, functional wooden household items and objects made before the mid-20th century, typically crafted by hand or on a lathe.

Carvers frequently utilised dense, rich hardwoods such as rosewood, boxwood, lignum vitae and mahogany to achieve crisp lathe-turned details and deep patination.

Authenticity and age are assessed through tool marks, the natural oxidisation and wear of the timber, the precision of the turning, and the construction methods of the lid and base joints.

Small turned wood items can be displayed in groupings on bookshelves, desks, or mantelpieces as part of a curated collection of historical curiosities.

Preservation requires keeping wooden items away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, applying occasional microcrystalline wax to maintain the finish without damaging the patina.
