Cheval mirrors originated in France during the late 18th century, named after the French word for horse due to the four-legged frame design, and became widely popular in British homes throughout the Victorian and Edwardian periods.

Edwardian pieces typically utilized solid timbers like walnut, mahogany, or oak, featuring mortise and tenon joinery, brass pivoting hardware, and hand-bevelled mirror glass set into pegged wooden frames.

Authentic pieces often display period-specific characteristics such as hand-cut dovetail joints, slight imperfections and oxidation within the mirror plate, traditional brass screw fixings, and dense grain patterns in the timber.

Pairing a warm wood frame with minimalist modern surroundings adds textural contrast and depth, allowing the antique to function as both a practical dressing accessory and a focal point that reflects light.

Maintain the timber by applying microcrystalline wax periodically, avoid placing the piece in direct sunlight or near heat sources to prevent wood splitting, and clean the glass using ammonia-free solutions applied to a cloth rather than sprayed directly.
