The Antique Windsor chair, a staple of country-style furniture, exudes charm and character. Initially appearing in the late 16th century, they became more prevalent in the 18th and 19th centuries, crafted from native woods like Oak, Elm, Fruitwoods, and the most rare, Yew wood.

A multitude of craftsmen in villages and towns produced various items, including coffins, cartwheels, and barrels. To adapt and ensure their livelihood, they began crafting country-style pieces such as the Windsor chair.

These chairs were often custom-made, which explains the variations in size despite similar designs. Their seats, carved from solid wood, are beautifully contoured and have become extremely comfortable with years of wear.

The chairs feature elegantly curved, out-swept arms made from steam-bent wood. The crinoline stretchers, a curved element beneath the seat, are particularly coveted for their design.

With centuries of use, the arms of these chairs have become smooth to the touch, a testament to their enduring quality. The finest examples boast steam-bent crinoline stretchers.

Sitting in an antique Windsor chair that has been in use for over two centuries is a unique experience, bringing one in touch with the rich patina, character, and colour that only time and use can bestow.
