Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

This nineteenth-century Anglo-Indian workbox originates from the gentleman's library tradition, taking a rectangular form constructed from coromandel wood in a dark brown palette. The exterior displays distinctive dark wood grain patterning with a moulded wavy profile running along the edges and sides, complemented by a small brass keyhole escutcheon set into the front. The lid lifts to reveal a fitted interior containing a collection of sea shells, alongside an ivory registration number. The box measures 16 cm high by 45 cm wide and 31 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this piece sits neatly atop a sideboard or a study desk, providing both a decorative surface accent and functional small-scale storage for keepsakes or stationery.

Anglo-Indian workboxes emerged during the nineteenth century, commissioned by British residents and visitors in India who sought traditional European forms executed in native Indian woods and craftsmanship. Coromandel wood, sourced primarily from Sri Lanka and India, became highly prized for its distinct dark striping and dense texture.

These boxes were predominantly constructed from solid or veneered Coromandel timber, also known as calamander, which is recognised for its contrasting black and hazel bands. Construction typically featured fine dovetail joinery, brass lock plates, and interior linings of silk, velvet, or sandalwood compartments.

Authentic pieces display dense, naturally heavy Coromandel wood with distinctive dark grain patterns that cannot be easily replicated by staining. They also feature original hand-cut dovetail joints, period-correct brass escutcheons, and often retain fitted interior trays or linings.

Position the workbox on a dark wood sideboard, console table, or executive office desk to serve as a focal point. It functions effectively as a decorative storage container for small personal items, desk accessories, or jewellery.

Keep the box away from direct sunlight, radiators, and sudden humidity changes to prevent the timber from drying, warping, or cracking. Apply a high-quality beeswax paste periodically to nourish the wood and maintain its surface finish.
