Regency convex mirrors gained popularity in early 19th-century Britain as both decorative objects and practical lighting aids. The curved glass reflected light from candles across dark dining rooms and drawing rooms, while also allowing butler staff to view the entire room discreetly.

These mirrors were typically crafted from carved pine wood coated with gesso, which was then water-gilded using gold leaf. The interior frame often featured a carved ebonised slip surrounding a curved convex glass lens.
