This pair of French bedside tables, dating from 1900, belongs to the French Provincial style and exudes a classic French Chateau aesthetic. Each piece is constructed from cherrywood, displaying a warm brown timber colour with a polished finish that highlights the natural grain of the wood. The design incorporates a distinct upper gallery shelf with a low contoured back, a serpentine drawer front fitted with a single circular metal pull handle, and a scalloped apron leading down to slender cabriole legs. These nightstands measure 80 cm high, 50 cm wide, and 37 cm deep. They function well as matching bedside tables in a bedroom, providing convenient surface space alongside a bed for lamps, books, and night-time essentials while adding traditional character and warmth to the interior layout of the home.

FAQs

French Provincial bedside tables, historically referred to as tables de chevet, originated in the 18th century as functional yet elegant bedroom furniture. They typically combine classic Parisian design influences, such as cabriole legs and serpentine fronts, with rustic regional timber craftsmanship.

Regional French craftsmen favoured durable native hardwoods such as cherrywood, walnut, and oak. Construction techniques often feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, peg joinery, and solid timber back panels designed for durability.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved details, asymmetrical scrollwork, and natural wear patterns along the feet and drawer pulls. Look for traditional joinery methods inside the drawers and subtle hand-planed irregularities on the back and undersides.

Pair the warm tones of cherrywood with modern neutral linens, woven textiles, and contemporary lighting. The delicate cabriole legs help maintain visual space, making them ideal flanking pieces for upholstered or timber bed frames.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the wood moisture and patina. Avoid placing solid cherrywood near direct heat sources or prolonged sunlight to prevent excessive drying and fading.
