Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Florentine mirrors from the 19th century are recognised by their deeply carved wooden frames, often executed in softwoods such as pine or lime. They feature intricate openwork motifs, including acanthus leaves, scrollwork, and shells, coated in gesso and finished with traditional gold leaf.

Traditional Florentine frames are constructed from hand-carved wood layered with a gesso plaster base. A coloured clay composition known as bole is applied over the gesso before fine sheets of gold leaf are laid and burnished.

Authentic period pieces display signs of hand-carving rather than molded resin, including subtle irregularities in the scrollwork. Visible red or grey clay bole beneath worn gold leaf, historic mirror plate oxidisation, and age-appropriate wear on the timber backboard further confirm authenticity.

A small Florentine mirror functions effectively as an accent piece within a gallery wall or positioned in narrow architectural spaces such as alcoves and entrance vestibules. The metallic warmth and detailed carving complement both minimalist backdrops and traditional decorative schemes.

Giltwood finishes require delicate maintenance using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to remove dust from crevices. Liquid cleaners, damp cloths, and chemical polishes must be avoided, as water and solvents dissolve gesso and ruin the leaf gilding.
