A cheval mirror is a freestanding, full-length mirror suspended on a swivel frame, allowing the glass to tilt. Originating in France during the late 18th century, they became popular in British homes throughout the Regency and Victorian periods.

Authentic period pieces are typically crafted from solid mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, often featuring veneered surfaces on secondary woods like pine. Construction involves traditional joinery such as mortise and tenon frames, hand-turned support columns, and mercury or early silvered mirror plates.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age in the glass, such as foxing or minor oxidation, hand-cut screws, and secondary wood matching the era. The frame joints will show hand-craftsmanship rather than modern machine tooling, and the mirror plate is often secured with wooden backs.

Preserve the timber by applying microcrystalline wax periodically, avoiding silicone-based polishes and direct sunlight that can fade the wood. Clean the mirror plate with a soft cloth and a gentle, alcohol-free glass cleaner sprayed onto the cloth rather than directly onto the glass to protect the aged backing.

A large antique mirror adds depth and natural light to a contemporary room, serving as a functional focal point against neutral walls. It can be paired with minimalist furnishings to highlight the warmth and rich grain of the period timber without overwhelming the space.
