Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian nursing chair is a low-seated, armless chair designed in the nineteenth century to allow mothers to nurse infants while sitting comfortably close to the floor. Their lower seat height and lack of armrests provided freedom of movement for women wearing wide skirts and crinolines.

These chairs were primarily constructed from solid hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood. Frames were carved by hand, stuffed with horsehair or natural fibres, and upholstered in materials like velvet, damask, or embroidered textiles, often set upon brass castors.

Authentic pieces feature characteristic proportions, including short cabriole or turned front legs, low seat heights around 30 to 40 centimetres from the floor, and spoon or balloon back designs. Period joinery, original ceramic or brass castors, and hand-carved timber embellishments further indicate authenticity.

A nursing chair functions effectively as an accent seat in a bedroom, dressing room, or quiet reading corner. Pairing the carved timber frame and textured upholstery alongside contemporary neutral decor creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Dust the timber frame regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and apply natural beeswax sparingly to maintain the wood finish. Vacuum fabric upholstery gently using a soft brush attachment, and keep the chair positioned away from direct sunlight and central heat sources to prevent timber cracking or textile fading.
