N Wilson Antiques Clocks has dated this Antique Mahogany Wall Clock to the Georgian era.
The top of the case is arched with a moulding to the top edge leading to the “hood” with can be slid forwards like a grandfather clock to reveal the movement. The hood then has two doors (one to each side) with lovely, silk backed, fretwork panels. The front of the hood also has a lovely inlay below the dial. The body of the case is then long and rectangular with the front edge being beautifully inlet. The door then has a lovely glass viewing window so the the pendulum can be seen ticking which is framed by a thin moulding. There is then a final thick moulding to the bottom of the case which then sits into the beautifully shaped wall bracket!
The dial is then enamel and set put in black Roman numerals. There is then a thing ring of dashes to the outside marking the minutes as well as every fifteen minutes being marked in Arabic Numerals. The dial then has two intricately shaped hands as well as a beautifully patterned surround. There is then a domed, protective glass set into a shaped bezel which closes via the lock to the left. Finally the dial is signed by the famous maker “VAILLANT PARIS”. Louis-Jacques Vaillant was registered as maker clocks between 1815 and 1830.
The movement is then wound from the front and accessed via the side doors of the hood and by removing the hood. It is an extremely rare example of the upmost quality and features a visible pinwheel escapement to the back off the movement. The pendulum is then a fully compensated example of superb quality incorporating brass and steel rods which stop the clock from gaining or loosing time due to changes in temperature. The movement is fully working and also strikes both the number of hours on the hour as well as once on the half past via a bell. It also comes complete with its winding key!
A truly rare, unique and exquisite example of an early French clock which shows off both quality in woodwork and horology.
