Clockwise is proud to offer this excellent and very well proportioned mahogany tavern/Norwich style wall clock for your consideration. This rare late Regency clock does everything a longcase does only in a much smaller space as it is 4 feet tall.
The eight day, rack-striking anchor escapement movement has just been serviced and strikes the hours on a very pleasing bell.
The flame mahogany case has a removable octagonal hood with opening door and decorative leaf designs to the lower quadrants, sitting atop a classic long trunk with a rounded lower section. The trunk door has it''s original working lock and key.
The excellent 11 1/2 inch dial has been carefully restored and is notated with the name and location of the maker - J Hodge, Helstone - and the clock retains its original spade hands.
From the Royal Cornwall Gazette dated 5th February 1864 the death of Mr. Jonathan Hodge was announced.
''SUDDEN DEATH - At Helstone, Mr. Jonathan Hodge, watchmaker and jeweller, whil
...st working in his shop as usual on Wednesday afternoon, he fell from his stool and expired instantly. The deceased, who was in the 63rd year of his age, was a native of Truro, had, for a day or two before, complained of his head, but nothing serious was apprehended.''
