Introduction

Antique Drop Dial Clocks

The form grew out of the English painted-dial tavern wall clock in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. A large glazed dial gave legibility across a room, and the short trunk beneath enclosed the pendulum bob, usually with a hinged door and small side windows so the movement could be reached and the bob seen.

What you'll meet on Sellingantiques is overwhelmingly English and spring-driven, with a fusee movement in a wooden case. The word 'wall' appears in 207 of 234 titles and 'fusee' in 124, with mahogany the commonest timber ahead of rosewood, walnut and oak. Dials run from 8 inches, the commonest stated size, up to a single 16-inch example.

Around half the category is the single fusee timepiece: it goes but doesn't strike. Twin or double fusee versions, striking the hours on a bell, are a smaller group. Rosewood and inlaid cases, some with mother-of-pearl or brass stringing, account for about one in ten. Nine American 8-day striking clocks sit alongside them, with one French and one German or Austrian case as the outliers.

Period labels in titles are loose. '19th Century' is the single largest bucket at 63 listings, with 'Victorian' at 29 and 'Regency' at 17, so read those as eras rather than datable years. Where decades are given they cluster mid-to-late Victorian, and the Georgian and Regency entries form a thin early tail.

Where The Range Splits

Age drives the top of the range more than anything else. The highest-priced examples sampled are early ones: wooden dials, bowed or convex dials, side-winding fusees, mostly dated between 1800 and 1840. A group of wooden-dial fusee clocks catalogued circa 1802 to circa 1810 are the earliest dated pieces, and one 18th-century entry with a verge escapement is the only verge in the whole archive.

Movement complexity is the next lever. A twin or double fusee striking the hours on a bell sits above a single fusee timepiece, and those striking versions cluster in the upper part of the sample. Below that, the plain American 8-day striking clocks of roughly 1890 to 1920 hold the bottom.

Case and dial decoration then separate one mahogany clock from another. Brass-inlaid and brass-strung cases, mother-of-pearl, burr walnut and flame mahogany all pull upward, as does a signed dial, whether a London name or a provincial one from Bristol, Liverpool, Leeds, Salisbury, Bath or Warwick. Service provenance does the same: GWR, South Eastern Railways, British Railways, the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway and GPO clocks turn up repeatedly near the top.

The Antique Drop Dial Clocks Glossary

Fusee
A tapered grooved pulley and chain that evens out the pull of the mainspring as it unwinds. It's named in over half the titles and is the defining English movement in this category.
Single fusee
A timepiece movement only, with one fusee. The clock goes but doesn't strike the hours.
Twin or double fusee
Two fusees, one driving the going train and one the striking train, sounding the hours on a bell.
Timepiece
A clock that tells the time without striking. Titles use the word to mark the difference from striking examples.
Trunk
The dropped box below the dial that houses the pendulum bob, normally with a hinged door and side windows.
Chisel bottom
A trunk finished with an angled, chisel-shaped lower end rather than a rounded or squared one.
Questions people ask

Antique Drop Dial Clocks: Frequently Asked Questions

What does 8 day mean on a drop dial clock?

It means the clock runs for eight days on a single wind, so a weekly winding keeps it going. The word 'day' appears in eleven titles on Sellingantiques.

It's stated most often on the American striking clocks, though English fusee examples are wound on the same weekly rhythm.

Are drop dial clocks always English?

Not always, but nearly. The archive is dominated by English fusee timepieces, with 'english' in 31 titles and 'london' in 28, covering both London and provincial work.

Nine American examples appear, usually 8-day striking clocks in walnut or mahogany. Beyond those, a single French ebonised case and one German or Austrian wall clock are the only non-English entries in 234 listings.

How big is the dial on a drop dial clock?

Titles quote dial size in inches, and the figures run from 8 inches at the small end up to one 16-inch example.

Eight inches is the commonest stated size, with 10, 12, 13 and 14 inch dials filling the middle. Anything from 12 inches up reads as a large clock in this category.

What is side-winding on a fusee wall clock?

Side-winding means the movement is wound through a hole in the side of the case rather than through the dial front.

It turns up on early examples, and titles naming a side-winding fusee sit consistently among the highest-priced clocks sampled, several dated between 1800 and 1835.

Do railway drop dial clocks come up often?

They appear now and again rather than regularly, and they scatter across the range with a bias toward the upper part of it.

Marked dials in the archive include Great Western Railway, South Eastern Railways, the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway, a British Railways clock named to a Hampshire station, the GPO and a GvR-marked example.

How many drop dial clocks come up for sale?

Around 29 come to market in a year on Sellingantiques, and 64 different dealers have listed one.

That spread means it's a form almost every clock dealer keeps rather than the preserve of a handful of specialists.
