Introduction

Antique Desk Clocks

The heading covers small free-standing clocks of desk or table scale. Of 732 titles on Sellingantiques, only a minority actually say "desk": the words that dominate are mantel or mantle (168 and 77), carriage (152) and table. Sizes run from sub-miniature carriage clocks a few inches high to giant carriage clocks and large marble garnitures.

French-made or French-styled work leads. "French" appears in 201 titles, the single commonest term, and inside that group the mantel clock and the carriage clock account for most of what turns up. Case materials cluster on gilt, ormolu and gilt bronze, then brass, marble and mahogany.

The French mantel branch is roughly a third of the category, with portico cases, four-glass crystal regulators, boulle, champleve enamel and figural bronzes among them. Carriage clocks are about a fifth, from mignonette up to giant. Art Deco desk clocks around 1930 in chrome, bakelite, vitrolite, mirror and opaline glass are about an eighth, and English fusee bracket, library and skeleton clocks roughly a tenth. A smaller group covers hallmarked silver easel and strut clocks, folding travel clocks and enamelled miniatures.

Dating is loose in places. 461 listings carry a clean year, spanning 1750 to 1960, but the biggest single bucket is the vague "19th Century" at 126, with "Victorian" behind it. Where decades are given they gather in the 1880s, 1890s, 1900s and 1860s, with a second peak in the 1930s from the Art Deco group.

What sets them apart

The Range

What the movement does separates the ends of the range more than anything else. A plain timepiece with no striking train, or a simple hour-and-half-hour striker, sits low. Grande and petite sonnerie, five-minute repeaters, date work, moon phase, perpetual calendar and equation of time sit high, and named escapements come with them: chaff-cutter, coup perdu detent, tic-tac, platform.

Case material follows the same line. Enamel appears in only 25 titles but concentrates near the top, in champleve, Limoges and guilloche work, alongside porcelain panels, malachite and boulle marquetry. Ormolu and gilt bronze sit above slate and plain marble; plain brass and chrome cases sit at the bottom third.

Size tells at both ends. Sub-miniature and mignonette carriage clocks and small library clocks reach the upper end, and so do the giant carriage clocks, one in rouge marble, one heavy enough for a dealer to call it massive. Ordinary mid-size rectangular cases fill the middle. Above all of it sit the novelty and industrial pieces: an automaton beam engine, a lighthouse with automata, a Davy lamp, a mortar gun, a knight's helmet, each turning up once and nowhere else.

The Antique Desk Clocks Glossary

Timepiece
A clock that only tells the time, with no striking train. The word carries 39 titles.
8-day
Runs about a week on one wind. It's the commonest duration stated, against the occasional 30-hour movement.
Fusee
A grooved drum and chain that evens out the pull of the mainspring. Thirty-six titles use it, usually English bracket, library or mantel clocks. Single fusee means a timepiece; twin or double means it strikes too.
Ormolu
Gilded bronze or brass, in mounts or whole cases. Sixty-seven titles, and the signature of the French group.
Gorge, corniche, doucine, one-piece
Named carriage-clock case profiles, used by dealers as shorthand for where a clock sits in the range.
Garniture
A clock sold with matching side pieces, usually urns, candelabra or figures.
Questions people ask

Antique Desk Clocks: Frequently Asked Questions

Are these all actually desk clocks?

No. The heading gathers small clocks of desk and table scale, and what dominates is the mantel or mantle clock, the carriage clock and the table clock.

Purpose-made desk models do appear, mainly the 20th-century ones: small alarm clocks, strut and easel clocks meant for an office or bedside rather than a chimneypiece.

What does a carriage clock listing usually mean?

A small brass-and-glass travelling clock with a handle on top. Carriage appears in 152 titles, 31 of them specifically brass carriage.

Dealers grade them by size, from sub-miniature and mignonette up to giant, and by case profile: gorge, corniche, doucine, one-piece. Repeating examples re-strike the last hour at the push of a button.

Why do so many say only 19th Century?

Because dating in this category is often left at a century or a reign. "19th Century" is the largest single period bucket at 126 titles, with "Victorian" close behind.

Titles reading "19th Century" sitting beside a description giving circa 1875 or 1880 are common, and 461 of the 732 listings carry a clean year at all.

How many turn up in a year?

Around 94 are listed in a year on Sellingantiques, and 118 different dealers have handled them. That's one of the broadest dealer bases in clocks.

Spread across five branches, it means the French mantel and carriage groups appear steadily while the odder things surface singly.

Which Art Deco desk clocks appear?

The Art Deco group is about an eighth of the category, most of it dated around 1930. Chrome carries 23 titles.

Materials in the samples run to chrome, bakelite, vitrolite, mirror and opaline or uranium glass, marble and onyx. Sculptural Art Deco groups reach the upper end of the range; plain chrome cases sit in the bottom third.

Do 18th-century examples come up?

The dated field starts at 1750, and the earliest sample is a French Louis Quinze pendule given as circa 1750.

But such entries are a handful: a Louis XVI marble urn clock, a three-piece set dated 1770, little else. The bulk of the field is 19th century and 1930s.
