Large Four Glass Deadbeat Fusee Bracket Clock

19th century
For Sale by Clockwise
Description

Clockwise is delighted to present this impressive London Victorian silver dial mahogany bracket clock, a particularly attractive example of late 19th-century London clockmaking, dating from 1872, with a movement of notable quality.

The substantial mahogany case is very much in the style of a library or five glass clock, and complimented by thick bevelled glass panels to each side and the top. Both doors have working locks and the case stands upon a pediment and ogee moulding under the front door.

The finely executed 7.5 inch silvered dial is furnished with elegant blued steel hands and foliate engravings to the corner. The dial is signed Webster, Queen Victoria Street, London and numbered 15577 which makes the clock easy to date.

Behind the dial lies a substantial and beautifully engineered eight-day, five-pillar, chain-driven twin-fusee movement with superior deadbeat escapement, reserved for the finest of clocks. The clock strikes the hours in full, with a single strike at the half-hour, upon a spiral gong of pleasingly mellow tone. The movement is further distinguished by the maker's name engraved to the backplate and a London pendulum. This clock has just been completely overhauled and as such benefits from my three year guarantee.

Richard Webster was part of the London clockmaking dynasty founded by William Webster in 1711. William Webster was apprenticed to John Barnet in 1701 and later worked under the renowned master Thomas Tompion. Richard

Webster inherited the business, became free of the Clockmakers' Company in 1844, and relocated the shop to Queen Victoria Street in 1872.

An appealing acquisition for the discerning collector of English bracket clocks and an elegant testament to the craftsmanship of London’s celebrated 19th-century clockmaking tradition.

Clockwise specialises in exceptional antique longcase and bracket clocks, combining specialist horological knowledge with an unwavering commitment to quality, authenticity and personal service. This Victorian four-glass bracket clock is made from mahogany with a warm brown timber colour, thick bevelled side glass panels, and a stepped plinth base. The case has an ogee moulding under the front door and stands on small wooden block feet. The white dial displays Roman numerals, blued steel hands, and floral corner spandrels, bearing the signature Webster, Queen Victoria Street, London and the number 15577. The object measures 42.5 cm high. It functions as a mantelpiece timepiece in a gentleman's library or study, placed on a sturdy shelf, desk, or table. Inside, the eight-day movement strikes the hours and half-hours on a spiral gong. The dial is accessed via a front door with a working lock, matched by a locking side panel glazed with thick bevelled glass. The mahogany timber exhibits a polished finish that highlights the natural grain of the wood. The clock sits level on its block feet, providing a stable presence for interior placement. It suits traditional studies, drawing rooms, or entrance halls, adding period character to domestic surfaces.

A fusee bracket clock utilises a cone-shaped pulley to equalise the pull of the mainspring, paired with a deadbeat escapement that reduces recoil for increased timekeeping precision. Popular in nineteenth-century Britain, these clocks frequently feature glazed side panels to display their mechanical movements.

Victorian bracket clocks typically feature solid or veneered mahogany cases, heavy brass movement plates, steel arbors, and clear lead glass apertures, alongside white painted or enamel dials decorated with corner spandrels.

Authentic Victorian fusee clocks feature heavy cast brass plates connected by screwed pillars, a steel chain or gut line wrapping around a conical fusee drum, and dial lettering often marked with the makers name and location.

Position the clock centrally on a traditional mantelpiece, a dark wood sideboard, or within an open bookshelf surrounded by leather-bound volumes to create a focal point in a study or living area.

Keep the clock away from direct sunlight, dampness, and heat sources, wind the mechanism regularly using the correct key, and have the internal movement professionally cleaned and lubricated by a horologist every five to seven years.
