Museum Quality Royal Doulton - J.w. Benson Mantel Clock

19th century
For Sale by Masons Antiques
Description

A unique opportunity to acquire an outstanding and very rare clock by Royal Doulton, Lambeth Ware, fitted with a J.W.Benson movement. These are two of the most revered names in antique circles.

We have been unable to find any comparative piece and believe this may be a one off.

The olive green body of the clock is in completely mint condition with no chips, cracks, repairs etc. It is shown both with and without a mahogany plinth. This is not original to the piece but gives an alternative display format if required.

There is a date mark of 1882 to the base and possibly a designers logo.

The 8 day movement, by Benson, is again, in impeccable condition with no chips, cracks or crazing. It has a brass bezel and thick bevelled glass. The movement has just been fully cleaned and serviced by our BHI registered horologist and carries our usual 12mths full parts and labour guarantee. It strikes on a bell on the half-hour and the hour.

The clock represents a solid investment opportunity that will appeal to both collectors of clocks and Royal Doulton .

This Victorian Neoclassical mantel clock is an earthenware piece from 1880. The body carries a glossy olive green glaze, mounted on a dark wooden base. Its architectural form includes a pediment top, intricate acanthus leaf relief, and floral rosette decorations. The circular white enamel dial displays blue Arabic numerals, surrounded by a polished brass bezel and fitted with two winding arbours. Measuring 26 cm high, 18 cm wide, and 12 cm deep, the clock displays symmetrical moulded detailing down to the fluted lower plinth. Suitable for placement on a traditional mantelpiece, study bookcase, or living room console table, the piece brings period character to a tabletop setting. The architectural proportions suit formal reception rooms or classic libraries where mantel clocks serve as functional decorative accents. The combination of glazed ceramic and timber provides a striking focal point among surrounding ornaments.

Victorian ceramic mantel clocks feature decorative glazed earthenware or porcelain cases housing precision spring-driven clock movements. These pieces frequently draw architectural inspiration from Neoclassical, Renaissance Revival, or Gothic style movements, incorporating molded relief details.

These timepieces are constructed with molded earthenware or stoneware cases finished in lead or monochrome glazes. The clock movements feature brass mechanisms, glass crystal bezels, and enamel dials mounted on wooden base plinths.

Authentic period examples display maker stamps or impressed pottery marks on the base or rear ceramic casing. The movements typically bear retailer markings or serial numbers stamped directly onto the brass plates and dial.

Place the clock centrally on a fireplace mantelpiece, credenza, or library bookshelf to serve as a visual focal point. Pair it with neutral stone, dark wood surfaces, or brass decorative objects to contrast with the coloured glaze.

Clean the glazed ceramic body gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh liquid cleaners that could penetrate fine crazing lines. Clock mechanisms require periodic servicing by a qualified horologist to maintain mechanical operation.
