English Fusee Dial Clock In An Inlaid Octagonal Mahogany Case.
circa 1845.
£2,400 $3,239 €2,825
A superior and very original example of this type of dial clock in great condition.
The 8 day duration, gut fusee movement with Anchor Recoil escapement, knopped pillars and shouldered plates.
Fixed to a 12'' diameter, bowed painted iron dial. Having outer divided minute track with triangular hour markings, black Roman hour numerals and the maker''s name ''SANDERS'' of ''London'' above and below the centre. The blued steel ''spade and poker'' hands are well executed.
In a solidly made, mahogany veneered octagonal oak case of good colour and patina. The front veneer is of rich figuring and inlaid with brass elongated diamonds, dots and floral roundels. The edge has a raised beading that is also inlaid, with brass lining. The right hand side and the bottom have toggled and hinged access doors but also, the case back has a large square access door to allow the fitting of the pendulum before hanging on the wall (this is usual with these fairly early octagonals). The hinged and loc...king cast brass bezel has a highly bowed glass.
The maker is probably Charles Sanders of London who is recorded as working in 1839.
Dimensions: 15 3/4'' wide x 15 3/4'' high x 6'' deep to the glass high point.
Condition: The movement is overhauled and working perfectly. The dial is excellent and though unrestored, the case construction is sound and it is of good colour. All of the inlay is intact. The case of course shows its age and usage but this only proves its authenticity. It is totally original even down to the door toggles!
