Immaculate J W Benson Fusee Dial Wall Clock

19th century
For Sale by Clockwise
Description

Clockwise is delighted to welcome into its collection this fine London eight day fusee dial clock from the famous J W Benson company. The rectangular plate anchor escapement movement has just benefitted from a full overhaul so the clock enjoys a three year guarantee.

The superbly restored 12 inch dial illustrates the maker as 'J W Benson, 25 Old Bond Street, London'. Benson had several London addresses and this one opened in 1872. Original hands with a dramatic hour hand compliment the overall appearance and these lie behind a heavy spun brass bezel which secures tightly, complete with old slightly rippled glass.

The mahogany case is of a standard two piece pegged construction with a solid mahogany surround attached to its original rear box. There is a side inspection door and the mahogany surround is in particularly fine condition. The rear box contains a lower door which closes firmly and stabilising hooks complete the practical and impressive appearance.

The prestigious firm of J.W. Benson was one of the most respected watch makers in London during the second half of the 19th Century. The business was originally set up by brothers James William Benson and Samuel Suckley Benson who advertised themselves as watchmakers, gold and silversmiths of Cornhill in the City of London. After just eight years the partnership was dissolved and J.W. Benson carried on alone. He took on additional premises at 32 Ludgate Hill and as the business grew, he added number 34 next door. By the 1860's he was advertising his large and richly stocked shop with adjoining workshop specialising not only in the manufacture of watches and clocks but also in their repair. He began to participate in both national and international expositions including London in 1862, Paris in 1867 and the Inventions Exhibition of 1885 at which he unveiled the 'Patent Dust and Damp Excluding Band for Watches'.

In 1872 a shop was opened on Bond Street which was followed by one in the Royal Exchange in 1890.

Ultimately this is a lovely piece of late Victorian clockmaking in excellent condition and ready for its new home.

Clockwise specialises in longcase and bracket clocks and with global clients from the world of business, film, sport, royalty and aristocracy - yet more than happy with traditional clients - Clockwise has an unrivalled reputation for excellence and superb service.

This Victorian wall clock is made of dark brown mahogany, brass, glass, and iron in a circular wall-mounted design with a turned mahogany surround, a hinged brass bezel enclosing slightly rippled glass, and spade clock hands. The white dial face displays black Roman numerals and the maker inscription 'J. W. Benson, 25 Old Bond St, London'. Measuring 36 cm high and 36 cm wide, the piece operates on an eight-day fusee movement with rectangular plate anchor escapement. It hangs easily in a home library, study, hallway, or narrow wall space, bringing period character and precise timekeeping to an interior. Built with a two-piece pegged mahogany case, solid rear box, side inspection door, lower door, and stabilising hooks, this clock reflects traditional British craftsmanship from the famous London horological firm. The restored face sits protected behind the heavy spun brass bezel and glass, while the original hands maintain their functional integrity. Suitable for daily use, the mechanism requires regular winding and professional care to preserve its mechanical health. It mounts securely to a wall surface to serve as both a practical timepiece and a decorative focal point in a traditional or transitional room scheme.

A fusee dial clock is a British wall timepiece utilizing a cone-shaped pulley and mechanical chain mechanism engineered to equalise the torque from the mainspring as it unwinds. Widely produced throughout the nineteenth century, these wall clocks were standard timekeeping instruments in offices, schools, and railway stations.

Traditional fusee dial clocks incorporate brass internal movement plates connected by iron arbors, housed within a turned mahogany, oak, or walnut wooden surround. The painted dial face is crafted from sheet metal and protected by a glass aperture housed in a heavy brass bezel.

Authentic fusee clocks contain a heavy mechanical movement operated by a gut line or wire cable wrapped around a conical fusee gear rather than a direct barrel spring. Original examples feature hand-painted Roman numerals on an enamelled iron dial, winding arbors, and hand-lathed timber surrounds.

Mount the dial clock as a singular focal point on a neutral or dark accent wall within a home office, hallway, or dining space. Combining the dark timber surround and reflective brass bezel with modern joinery or stone surfaces creates a refined aesthetic contrast.

Ensure the clock is mounted level on a structurally stable wall and wound using the correct size key without forcing the mechanism. Clean the timber casing with a soft cloth, keep brass components free from moisture to prevent uneven oxidisation, and arrange professional mechanical horological servicing every five years.
