North Eastern Railway Dial Clock, Newcastle, Victorian

19th century
For Sale by Clockwise
Description

Clockwise is delighted to offer for your consideration this authentic Victorian North Eastern Railway (NER) fusee dial clock, dating from circa 1900 and with good provenance. A handsome example of Britain’s railway horological heritage, it combines historic significance with excellent presentation.

The clock is fitted with a quality English, chain-driven, eight-day fusee movement, fully overhauled and in excellent condition. It has rectangular plates with screwed pillars, while the backplate is stamped NER 1139 and 7523.

The restored mahogany case has attractive colour and mature patination. The back-box features a side inspection door and a lower access door with a working turnkey.

The original 12-inch dial is in excellent restored condition. Repainted after 1948 by the railway clock workshops at Doncaster, it bears the later British Railways North Eastern marking BR NE 6328. Repairers’ marks dated 1937 and 1956 remain on the reverse; please see the accompanying photographs. Original spade hands and a substantial cast bezel complete its classic railway appearance.

Originally supplied to the North Eastern Railway circa 1900, the clock’s last recorded place of use, according to LNER clock records, was the Walker Gate Carriage & Wagon Staff Office, Newcastle upon Tyne.

Its NER origins, Doncaster workshop history and later BR NE marking provide a compelling record of service across successive eras of Britain’s railway history.

Presented in gorgeous condition, this rare clock has a fully overhauled movement, beautifully restored mahogany case and excellent restored dial. It is supplied with Clockwise’s standard three-year guarantee.

Clockwise offers one of the UK’s largest collections of authentic, restored railway clocks, with further examples being added over the coming months. Clockwise specialises in longcase and bracket clocks and with global clients from the world of business, film, sport, royalty and aristocracy - yet more than happy with traditional clients - Clockwise has an unrivalled reputation for excellence and superb service.

This Victorian wall clock is an authentic railway dial timepiece dating from circa 1900, representing Britain's industrial horological heritage in a Victorian Industrial style. The piece has a dark brown turned mahogany bezel with visible wood grain, a polished brass circular bezel frame holding the glass face, and an off-white dial bearing black Roman numerals alongside the painted inscription B.R.N.E. and digits 6328. Black spade clock hands sweep across the face, while a single winding aperture sits below the centre. The heavy timber case exhibits mature patination and minor surface wear consistent with its age, accompanied by a small brass side latch. Measuring 39 cm high and 39 cm wide, it is well-suited for mounting on a narrow wall space in a study, gentleman's library, or hallway in a home today.

A railway dial clock is a round wall-mounted timepiece historically used by railway companies to ensure precise scheduling across stations, platforms, and signal boxes during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

These clocks traditionally feature a solid mahogany or oak circular surround, a painted sheet iron dial, a brass bezel with glass, and a mechanical spring or weight-driven brass movement.

Authentic railway clocks often display company acronyms or serial numbers printed directly on the dial face, stamped into the reverse of the wooden case, or engraved onto the brass movement plates.

A railway dial clock creates an architectural focal point when hung above a sideboard, positioned along a hallway corridor, or integrated into an eclectic gallery wall alongside artwork.

Keep the clock positioned away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage, clean the exterior glass and brass bezel with a dry microfibre cloth, and have the mechanical movement serviced periodically by a qualified horologist.
