Clockwise has dated this Fusee Dial Railway Clock to the Victorian era.

The clock is fitted with an eight-day, chain-driven fusee movement featuring rectangular plates and anchor escapement. Recently subjected to a comprehensive overhaul, the movement is in excellent working order and is offered with a three-year guarantee for additional peace of mind. The movement is stamped N.E.R. 1051 and 5063 to the rear, providing important identifying details that contribute to the clock’s historical interest.

The pendulum is similarly annotated (see photos).
The original 10-inch dial is in excellent condition and retains the distinctive legend B.R. (N.E.) 2745. Records indicate that the clock was last located at the Leeds City Police Office Parade Room. The reverse of the dial preserves the expected annotations associated with its railway service, including evidence of re-grouping at Doncaster Workshops in 1923 and the subsequent rebranding from the North Eastern Railway to British Railways North Eastern Region in 1948. These historical markings, illustrated in the accompanying photographs, offer a tangible connection to the clock’s long service life. The dial is complemented by its original spade hands and a spun-brass bezel with sight ring. The bezel retains its original security tab.

The handsome mahogany case is of traditional two-piece pegged construction. It retains both side inspection doors with their original tabs, together with a lower door that closes securely and operates with its original lock. Stabilising hooks remain fitted to the base, while one side door amazingly retains an original N.E.R. label bearing the handwritten number 1051. This important surviving detail, shown in the accompanying photographs, is a very rare find. There are repairers marks dated to the rear of the clock (see accompanying photos) and within the clock case.

Smaller-format railway clocks of this type are increasingly difficult to find, particularly examples that combine such attractive condition, a freshly overhauled movement with long guarantee and a wealth of surviving historical detail.
